29th Sunday of Ordinary Time

SCRIPTURE:

1ST Reading—Exodus 17:8-13
2nd Reading— 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2
Gospel— Luke 18: 1-8

Imagine that your child or grandchild for some of you, wants an ice cream cone. The child keeps asking and asking and yet you tell the child many things to hold off their constant persistence: “You just had lunch”. “You’ll spoil your dinner”. “You’ll get your good clothes dirty”. “You didn’t do what I asked you earlier”. “We do not have time to stop”. But the child is persistent asking and asking until you finally can not stand it anymore and you give in and buy that ice cream cone.

I see some kids in this congregation. Now kids, this is not a lesson into how to get things from your parents or grandparents. If you listen real close you will learn how God always wants you to reach out to him in prayer. O.K ?

Two guys are talking about fishing. One says to the other, “I am NEVER going to take my kids fishing with me, ever again!

“They did everything wrong! EVERYTHING! They talked too much, they made the boat rock constantly, they tried to stand up in the boat, they baited the hook wrong, used the wrong lures, and worst of all, they caught more fish than me!!!!!!!!

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture:
1st Reading   Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23
2nd Reading  Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11
Gospel Luke 12: 13-21

In an attempt at leading her young class on an exploration of their values, a second grade teacher gave the following assignment to her class: Take a large piece of butcher paper or cardboard and draw a line down the center. On the top left side of the line write “Needs”.On the top right put “Wants”.

A few days later when the assignment was due, the classroom was filled with colorful and candid reminders of the materialistic nature within which Christianity is challenged to make an impact. Little fingers and small hands, those of innocence, had cut out images of video-game systems, giant-screen t.v.’s, multi-speed bicycles, as well as the necessities of a young persons diet: ice cream sundaes, cookies, pies and cakes, and a large assortment of candies.

Sometimes I feel like I am wearing a heavy backpack. It is a backpack wrapped tightly around my mind, my knees buckling under the weight as I trod down the trail of life.

Along the way I continue to pick up feelings, beliefs, thoughts, experiences and memories that I have come to on my own and that others have helped me form; each new addition making my load heavier.

Corpus Christi

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

Scripture:
1st Reading- Genesis 14:18-20
2nd Reading- 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Gospel- Luke 9:11b-17

This Solemnity today should touch each of us very deeply. Today is a day that the Father’s love for us is exemplified through Jesus Christ. Today is a day where we are reminded of what happens at every Mass throughout the world. Just as real as Jesus at the Last Supper, the priest, in our case, Father Rick, stands in “Persona Christi” in the person of Christ, consecrating and bringing life to all of us through Jesus’ body and blood in the Eucharist.

I know this is nothing new for us, that we believe that this is not bread and wine but for us the body and blood of Jesus Christ. But do we really understand the consequences of our belief and do we experience it?
