Lent Book Discussion Group

EverybodyNeedsToForgiveSomeone

Due to the success of our previous book discussion groups, the Evangelization Council is setting up Lenten discussion groups.  Since Lent is a penitential season, the book selected is ‘Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody‘ by Allen Hunt of Dynamic Catholic.  As with previous groups, there will be 3 separate meeting times:  one on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM, one on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM, and one on Wednesdays at Noon.  The first of these weekly meetings will be held on Tuesday, March 7th and Wednesday, March 8th.  All the meetings will be held in classroom 11.

There are 12 chapters in this book, so each meeting will cover 2 chapters.  The books will be available by Ash Wednesday, March 1st, so you will have adequate time to prepare for the first meeting.  As with the previous groups, these will be casual, low-key, discussion sessions.  Everyone will have opportunity to express their views if they so desire, but no one will be called on directly.  This is not a class and there will be no tests :-).

If you are interested in joining one of these groups, please fill out your name and contact information, and which group you want to participate in, on one of the signup sheets located on the table in the narthex.  Then just drop it in the Book Group basket.  The cutoff for signing up is Tuesday, February 28th, the day before Ash Wednesday.

If you are interested in joining one of the groups, please call the office at (360)221-5383 or contact John Scehovic.

We are limiting the size of each group to 12 members so that everyone can participate fully in the discussions, so don’t delay in signing up.  Accommodations will be made if more than 12 sign-ups for any one group.  Also please note that even though you sign up for one particular session you can attend either of the others if scheduling conflicts occur.

Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to learn new ways to forgive and to see how forgiveness can dramatically change your life for the better.  We look forward to your participation.

Prayer for Migrant and Refugees

Lord Jesus, when you multiplied the loaves and fishes, you provided more than food for the body, you offered us the gift of yourself, the gift which satisfies every hunger and quenches every thirst!  Your disciples were filled with fear and doubt, but you poured out your love and compassion on the migrant crowd, welcoming them as brothers and sisters.

Lord Jesus, today you call us to welcome the members of God’s family who come to our land to escape oppression, poverty, persecution, violence, and war.  Like your disciples, we too are filled with fear and doubt and even suspicion.  We build barriers in our hearts and in our minds

Lord Jesus, help us by your grace,

  • To banish fear from our hearts;
  • To welcome migrants and refugees with joy and generosity;
  • To learn the ways of peace and justice;
  • To share our abundance;
  • To give witness to your love for all people.

We praise you and thank you for the whole human family that reflects the one Most Holy Trinity in whom we make our prayer:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Knights of Columbus 11th Annual Potato Drive

The St. Hubert’s Knights of Columbus Council recently held a successful food drive for South Whidbey food banks.Potatos5

Maple Wood Farms in Mount Vernon donated 18,000 pounds of potatoes to the Knights of Columbus of St. Hubert’s 11th annual potato drive on Oct. 22. Hanson’s Building Supply of Langley transported the potatoes from Mount Vernon to St. Hubert Catholic Church in Langley.

Along with parishioners, members of the Mobile Turkey Unit and Oak Harbor and Coupeville Knights of Columbus Councils started bagging at 8 a.m. By 10 a.m., the potatoes were sorted into 10-pound bags and then delivered to island food bank charities. They included: Good Cheer of Langley, South Whidbey Senior Center, Mobile Turkey Unit of South Whidbey, Soup Kitchen of Langley, St. Hubert Catholic Church, St. Mary’s food bank in Coupeville and the Help House of Oak Harbor.

Advent Book Discussion Groups

GroupThanks to all of you who responded to the survey last month regarding ways to strengthen our Faith Formation Program. We received over 185 responses. Book discussion groups was one of the most popular categories that respondents indicated they would like to participate. Over 70 people said they would like to be part of a monthly book discussion group, 59 said they’d like to be part of a weekly Advent book discussion group, and 72 for a weekly Lenten book discussion group.

As a result of this feedback, and since Advent is right around the corner, the Evangelization Council is setting up 3 Advent book discussion groups: one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening. There will be 4 weekly meetings of these groups during Advent starting on November 29th.

The first book we’ve chosen to discuss is “Rediscover Jesus” by Matthew Kelly. Father made copies of this book available as a gift to all parishioners last year. In case you missed getting one, there are still a few copies left in the narthex. Each page of this book seems to effortlessly reach into our lives, providing spiritual wisdom and practical insights that help us to know both Jesus, and ourselves, in a new way. All you have to do is read the prologue and you will be instantly drawn in. It will be an ideal book to discuss in a group setting.

If you are interested in joining one of these groups, please fill out your name and contact information, and which group you want to participate in, on one of the signup sheets located on the table in the narthex. Then just drop it in the Book Group basket. The cutoff for signing up is Thursday, November 24th, Thanksgiving Day.   We are limiting the size of each group to 12 members so that everyone can participate fully in the discussions, so don’t delay in signing up.

Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to draw closer to our Lord by joining one of these groups. We look forward to your participation.
